Bike Week 2019
It’s getting to be that time of year again where hundreds of thousands of people descend upon Daytona Beach for Bike Week. This year, it will take place from March 8-17th, and city officials expect over half a million motorcycles in the area. These 10 days are a non-stop celebration of all things motorcycle, with everything from manufacturer expos to concerts and races. At The Troutman Law Firm, we hope you have a blast taking in all the festival has to offer, as we ourselves are big motorcycle fans and avid riders.
But, always remember to keep safety first. Every year there are serious injuries and fatalities at Bike Week, and, with all the distractions and extra drivers on the roads, you need to take extra care. Here are a couple key things you can do to protect yourself as much as possible at Bike Week.
Wear Proper Protective Gear
Though you might love to ride without a helmet, we strongly encourage you to think about wearing one while at Bike Week. It is wonderful that Florida gives riders the option to wear a helmet while riding, but at a crowded event, you should really consider the risks involved before making your decision. It can make the difference between minor injuries and major ones, or even death. Likewise, make sure you have on proper footwear and pants, since about 30% of all motorcycle injuries are to the legs and feet.
Check Your Insurance Coverage
Before cruising down to Bike Week, it is extremely important to make sure you have insurance to cover you in all situations. How will you know if you are prepared? In Florida, if you are struck by an uninsured driver or one without Bodily Injury Liability coverage, you will not be able to obtain compensation from them for your injuries. That is, unless you have Uninsured Motorist coverage. This will protect you when the other driver is under-insured or uninsured.
There are 2 ways you can get Uninsured Motorist coverage for your motorcycle. First, you can pay for it individually on each of your vehicles. Sometimes, this can get pricey. Fortunately, you can also get “stacked” coverage, where Uninsured Motorist coverage on your cars also applies to your motorcycle, even if it is insured with a different company or itself uninsured. We always recommend you pay for this coverage, especially when you plan on attending Bike Week.
