I-4, America’s Most Dangerous Road

A GPS tracking company, Teletrac Navman, says the accident fatality rate on I-4 is highest in all of America, putting it at the top of the list of the most dangerous highways in America. With 132 miles of road and 165 fatalities, I-4 is responsible for 1.25 fatalities per mile. This is more than any other highway studied.

Where is I-4?

If you live in the Central Florida area, you are certainly familiar with this traffic packed road. Interstate 4 is a highway that runs northeast and southwest across the state of Florida from Daytona Beach to Tampa. The area from Sea World to Champions Gate that runs directly through Downtown Orlando, is said to be the most likely area on which to get in a crash. As of late, this has only been exacerbated by the current I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project makeover. While the project will ultimately improve the state of traffic from the Attractions area to Winter Park, currently there are road blocks set up during hours of construction causing a big problem in the flow. This is especially true in areas such as the 408 interchange, leading to increasing amounts of road rage situations on the highway as well as speeding to make up for the time spent sitting bumper-to-bumper.

What is Causing People to Crash?

The top causes of the crashes vary but the main offenders include alcohol, speeding, distracted driving and use of cell phones, as well as our inclement Florida weather. The best way to keep yourself safe is to become a defensive driver. Keep good distance between yourself and other cars, keep your speed down, be focused and alert when driving, and anticipate other car’s moves.
